Ford Transit Connect

The Urban Business Solution: the History of the Ford Transit Connect

Many small business owners require a cargo van to transport their employees or haul bulky items, but don't need the high price tag and massive size of most vans on the market. For these urban-minded business owners, there is the Ford Transit Connect. Developed by Ford Europe in 2002, the Transit Connect was imported to the United States for the 2010 model year.

In Europe, Ford had previously released a cargo van that was based on the Ford Escort. With the Escort ceasing production, Ford Europe brought in Peter Horbury to design a replacement cargo van, and the Ford Transit Connect was born. It was built atop the Ford C170 platform, which also housed the Ford Focus before the 2012 redesign. The vehicle was quite successful upon release and won "Van of the Year 2004" from Professional Van and Light Truck Magazine.

American Debut

The Ford Transit Connect was first shown at the Chicago Auto show in 2008 and again in 2009 where the 2010 American Transit Connect model made its debut. It featured a slightly different look with an altered front grille and bumper, new dashboard, and updated instrument panel. To introduce the vehicle, Ford brought the cargo van to 13 urban areas in May 2009. The following year, the North American International Auto Show named it the Truck of the Year.

2014 Ford Transit Connect

The 2014 Ford Transit Connect has a base MSRP of $24,525 and is available in three different models. It's powered by the base 2.5L Duratec DOHC four-cylinder and generates 169 hp as well as 171 lb-ft of torque. It also earns EPA fuel economy estimates of 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. Drivers can also opt for the 1.6L EcoBoost I-4 engine that enhances output to 178 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. This model earns better EPA fuel economy estimates of 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.
