The Ford Mustang: The Iconic American Sports Coupe

One of the most successful Ford vehicles introduced since the Model A, the Ford Mustang, has gone through many changes since its 1964 debut. As the original "pony car," featuring a long hood and short rear deck, this sports coupe revolutionized the industry. Recent versions have adopted an updated version of the model's iconic design, recalling the classic muscle car in both style and performance capabilities.

A Classic from the Beginning

  • Shortly following its debut, the Mustang shattered sales forecasts. In its first 18 months, over one million Mustangs were built.
  • The 1979-1993 editions bore little resemblance to the classic. Based upon the longer Fox platform, it was available as a coupe, notchback, hatchback, and convertible.
  • 1994-2004 saw yet another redesign, incorporating several styling clues from the early models. However, this was the first time since 1974 that drivers no longer had a hatchback coupe option.
  • Echoing the fastback design popular during the late 1960s, the 2005 Mustang returned to more iconic style and performance values of preceding models.
  • In 2012, a new Mustang Boss 302 model made its debut, which generated a whopping 444 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. Also available was a "Laguna Seca" edition.

The Current Edition

A redesigned Mustang is expected for the 2015 model year, but the 2014 version has plenty to offer consumers. The base model is equipped with a 3.7L V6 engine that still earns an EPA-estimated 31 mpg on the highway while delivering 305 hp. Drivers have the choice of a coupe or convertible with four trim levels available: V6, V6 Premium, GT, and GT Premium. Even the base V6 is stocked with impressive amenities such as:

  • Xenon headlights
  • Cruise control
  • A limited-slip rear differential
  • 17-inch alloy wheels
