The Ford Expedition: A Luxurious Full-Size SUV

The Ford Expedition is a full-sized SUV that shares a platform with Ford's F-150 pickup. It was created to replace the Ford Bronco. As of 2005, the Expedition is the brand's largest truck-based SUV, and it provides plenty of power and towing capacity to handle even the toughest challenges.

First Generation: 1997-2002

The first generation Expedition in was introduced in 1996 as a 1997 model and included seating for up to nine passengers. It offered many standard and available features such as illuminated running boards, heated side view mirrors, and a power moonroof.

Optional on the Expedition was automatic ControlTrac four-wheel drive and an adaptive pneumatic air ride suspension system. Engine options include a 4.6L and a 5.4L Triton V8. When properly equipped, the first generation Expedition could tow up to 8,100 pounds. In 1999, the Expedition was updated to include a new front grille and bumper.

Second Generation: 2003-2006

The Expedition was completely redesigned for the 2003 model year. It features a new four-wheel independent long-travel suspension system, allowing for improved ride quality, more control on uneven terrain, and increased towing capacity. This was the first full-size body-on-frame SUV to feature fully independent suspension.

Third row seating became standard, and available features included a navigation system, a rear seat DVD entertainment system, and a power moonroof. In 2005, the Expedition received a Limited trim option, which offered chrome-clad aluminum wheels, chrome tipped exhaust, and chrome accented roof rails. This trim replaced the Eddie Bauer Premier version.

Third Generation: 2007-Present

The third generation of the Ford Expedition received mainly mechanical enhancements although it also underwent a sheet metal refresh as well. During this generation, the automaker's new 6-speed 6R75 intelligent automatic transmission with dual overdrive gears made its debut. Cosmetic upgrades range from the addition of Ford's iconic three "hollow-bar" grille to a new dash and center stack more similar to that of the Ford F-150.

The 2014 model has plenty of space to seat eight passengers comfortably, and among its many highlights are:

  • Standard 40/20/40-split second-row seating
  • Up to 108.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the regular-size Expedition
  • Independent rear suspension for a smooth ride?
