Power

The 2016 Ford Escape features your choice of three powerful engines. The 2.5L Duratec engine uses an independent variable cam shaft timing system, or i-VCT, along with sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection for a smooth and steady stream of power no matter how fast or slow you're going. This engine produces 168 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque, getting up to 31 mpg highway with the 6-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. You can also choose the 1.6L 4-cylinder engine that uses EcoBoost technology for a superior compression ratio, meaning you'll get all the power you want in a small engine without sacrificing fuel economy. This engine uses two i-VCT systems, or Ti-VCT, as well as turbocharged direct fuel injection to give you the power you need when you want to feel speed. It produces 178 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, getting up to 32 mpg highway. Choose between front-wheel drive or Ford's intelligent 4-wheel drive, which sends just the right amount of torque to each wheel individually in order to increase your traction and control on slick or rough surfaces. Finally, the 2.0L 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine uses Ti-VCT and turbocharged direct injection to produce an incredible 240 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque, getting 30 mpg highway.

The 2016 Toyota RAV4 comes with just one engine, although you can opt for two different configurations of that engine. The base engine is a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine with a dual overhead cam shaft and a dual variable valve timing system with intelligence, which produces 176 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque. It uses a 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with intelligence to get 31 mpg highway. You can also opt for the same engine but with a single variable valve timing system, which produces 194 hp with the same torque of 172 lb-ft, getting a mere 21 mpg highway. While it's more powerful than the base Duratec engine on the Escape, it lags behind the smaller EcoBoost engine in torque and behind the larger EcoBoost engine in every measure of power.
