The Ford Escape Hybrid: The First of Its Kind

A hybrid-powered version of the very popular and successful Ford compact crossover, the Ford Escape Hybrid was a trendsetter in the automobile industry. As the world's first hybrid SUV, and the first U.S.-built hybrid vehicle, it was one of the most fuel efficient SUVs on the market. Employing all of the innovation and versatility of Ford's standard crossover while adding the efficiency of advanced hybrid technology, the Escape Hybrid appeals to a wide and varied segment of consumers.

Fully Integrated Innovation

Launched in 2004, 4 years after the regular model Escape, the hybrid edition featured a 2.3L gasoline engine paired with an electric motor for a combined 155 hp. The EPA rated the Ford hybrid as being 70% more efficient than the regular version.

Standard features included cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote entry, and an 8-way power adjustable driver's seat. As a full hybrid, the Escape automatically switches between electric power, gasoline power, and a combination of both. The regenerative braking system converts excess braking energy into electricity to be stored in the batteries.

The 2008 model saw updates to the exterior and interior styling. The Ford SYNC interface was added in 2009, along with a stability control system and a larger 2.5L gasoline engine. A parallel parking system and a revised electric A/C compressor were included on the 2010 edition.

The Final Model

Available in either the base or Limited trim levels, the 2012 Escape Hybrid is offered with 2WD or AWD. The 2.5L 4-cylinder engine combines with two electric motors to produce 177 hp. An electronically controlled continuously variable transmission is standard.

Features on the Base trim include:

  • Ford SYNC
  • Anti-lock brakes
  • Stability control
  • Power driver's seat
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control

Added with the Limited trim is:

  • Leather upholstery
  • Sunroof
  • Rear parking assist
  • Heated front seats

The 2012 edition was the last to be offered, as Ford has decided to discontinue production with the introduction of the third generation Escape.
